Embarking on a journey to India as a solo female traveler can feel daunting, but it's also an incredibly rewarding experience. When I first considered this adventure, I had so many questions and concerns.
Now, having spent over two months traveling across India in 2023 at the age of 22, I'm here to share my experiences and tips to help you prepare for your own trip. Despite the many warnings I received about safety, I discovered that with proper planning and precautions, you can have an amazing and safe journey.
During my travels, I encountered many women who, unfortunately, didn't have the most pleasant experiences. It was really tough to hear their stories. I can't help but think that if they had known some of these tips and advice, their trips might have been much more enjoyable.
That's why I want to share these insights with you, hoping they make your journey smoother and safer.
Understanding the local culture
Dress appropriately
I get it—dressing conservatively might seem odd, especially if you're used to wearing whatever you like. I felt the same way at first. But when you're in a country with more conservative norms, like India, it's important to cover your shoulders, cleavage, and thighs. Trust me, it helps you avoid unwanted attention and shows respect for the local culture. It might take a bit of adjustment, but it's worth it to blend in and feel more comfortable in your surroundings.
As for what to wear and pack, I'd recommend bringing lightweight, breathable clothing that covers you well. Long skirts, loose pants, and tops with sleeves are great choices. A scarf or shawl is also handy for covering up when needed, like when visiting temples or other religious sites. Even when you decide to wear a tank top, or something that lets people see your shoulders, you can just throw a scarf over them and problem solved! Comfortable shoes are a must for exploring, and don’t forget a good hat and sunglasses to protect yourself from the sun. Packing versatile pieces that you can mix and match will make your travel wardrobe easier to manage.
Cultural sensitivity
One of the best ways to make the most of your travels is by understanding and respecting local customs. Before my trip, I spent some time researching India's cultural norms, and it made a huge difference. Simple gestures, like greeting people with a respectful nod or handshake, can really help in making positive connections. However, for your safety, remember that you don’t have to shake hands if you’re not comfortable. A polite nod or smile is often sufficient. It's also important to be aware of local social cues and expectations, which can prevent misunderstandings. By showing respect for the local culture, you’ll find that your interactions are more meaningful and your overall experience is much richer.
Safety precautions
Stay in safe areas
Choosing the right place to stay and the areas you travel to are both crucial for your safety. When it comes to accommodation, always opt for places in well-reviewed and safe neighborhoods. I personally stayed in hostels throughout my trip and felt completely safe, but there are plenty of other options available if you prefer different types of accommodations. You can find more detailed tips on choosing the right place to stay in my “Everything you need to know before traveling to India for the first time” post.
Hostels
Since I usually travel alone and enjoy socializing without spending too much money, I often stay in hostels. They offer various room options and useful services. I always book my accommodation through Hostelworld, a platform I find trustworthy.
Hotels
If you prefer more comfort and security, staying in hotels is a great option. For booking hotels, I recommend using Booking.com, which is reliable and widely used in India too.
You can access Hostelworld here and Booking.com here. If you use my links, I may receive compensation at no extra cost to you.
As for the places you visit, it's important to be mindful of which areas you explore. For example, I chose to skip Delhi during my trip, even though it's the capital and I don't regret it in the slightest. I decided that my journey would be more enjoyable without venturing into the busy and sometimes overwhelming city. It's all about finding a balance that makes you feel comfortable and safe. Whether you prefer exploring quieter towns or bustling cities, always do your research and trust your instincts when planning your itinerary.
Transportation tips
When traveling around India, choosing reputable transport options is key to staying safe. Stick to official taxis, ride-sharing services, or transport provided by your hotel. This can help you avoid potential scams or uncomfortable situations. One thing I always recommend is to avoid walking alone at night, especially in unfamiliar or poorly lit areas. If you do need to travel after dark, it's much safer to use a car or go with a group.
Being mindful of how and when you travel can significantly reduce risks. For a more detailed guide on navigating transportation in India and preparing for any challenges, check out my separate blog post titled "Getting around in India: Tips". It covers everything you need to know to make your journey smoother and safer.
Keep valuables secure
While I personally didn't use an anti-theft bag during my trip and never had an issue with pickpockets, it's still a good precaution to consider. These bags often have features like lockable zippers and slash-resistant straps, which can give you extra peace of mind.
I also tend to avoid wearing expensive jewelry, not just to minimize risk but because it's simply not my style. It's a good idea to keep things low-key and not draw unnecessary attention.
Also, instead of carrying your original passport everywhere, keep a photocopy with you and leave the original in a secure place, like at the place you stay at. This way, you can enjoy your adventures with one less thing to worry about.
Interacting with locals
Be polite but assertive
While it's great to be friendly when traveling, it's also important to set clear boundaries, especially as a solo female traveler. If someone makes you uncomfortable, don't hesitate to be firm in your response. A polite but assertive "no" can often stop unwanted advances or pushy sales pitches. Remember, your safety and comfort always come first, even if it means being less polite than you're used to.
Fun fact: India actually helped me cure my people-pleasing tendencies! It taught me that it's okay to prioritize my own well-being and be assertive when necessary. So, don't be afraid to stand your ground and protect your space.
Handling unwanted attention
Let's be real, as a solo female traveler, you might sometimes get unwanted attention. It can be uncomfortable, but it's important to stay calm and confident. If someone crosses a line, don't be afraid to firmly state your boundaries. A clear, confident "no" can often make a big difference. And remember, it's totally okay to walk away or seek help if you need to.
I get how awkward and unsettling it can feel, but your comfort and safety come first. You're not obligated to be polite if someone is making you uncomfortable. Trust your gut—it's your best ally in these situations. We're all just trying to enjoy our journeys, and sometimes that means standing up for ourselves.
Avoid over-sharing
Be cautious about the personal information you share with strangers. It's best to avoid disclosing details about where you're staying or your travel plans. Sharing too much can make you vulnerable, so keep conversations general and steer clear of discussing personal details with people you don't trust. I even heard to not tell people if it's your first time in India, because some may take advantage of that.
Managing emergencies
Have a safety plan
It's always wise to have a safety plan in place, just in case. Make sure you know the local emergency numbers and keep them handy. It’s also a good idea to locate the nearest hospitals, police stations, and embassies before you head out exploring. Knowing a few basic phrases in the local language, especially those related to emergencies, can be a huge help.
This might sound a bit intense, but it's really about being prepared and feeling secure. Knowing what to do and where to go if something unexpected happens can make a big difference in how confident and relaxed you feel during your travels. It's all about having peace of mind so you can focus on enjoying your adventure.
Stay connected
Staying connected with friends or family is crucial for your safety, especially when traveling solo. Make it a habit to regularly update them on your whereabouts and travel plans. For example, I shared my location with my sister and best friend at all times. To ensure reliable communication, consider buying a local SIM card. This helped me feel a lot more safe all the time.
For a hassle-free experience, I strongly recommend using an eSIM. If you're thinking about getting one, I highly recommend Airalo. This is the one I used. You can buy one Sim Card and if your data is running low you can just top up whenever you like. Having a reliable way to communicate means you can quickly reach out for help if needed and stay connected throughout your journey. You can check them out here.
Exploring Safely
Daylight Exploration
It's generally safer to explore new places during the day. Daylight hours provide better visibility and a higher likelihood of encountering other tourists and locals. It's a good idea to stick to popular tourist areas and avoid venturing into isolated or unfamiliar neighborhoods, especially after dark.
Personally, I never went out in the evenings unless I was with people I knew and trusted, and who were familiar with the area. This way, I felt a lot more comfortable and safe during my travels.
Additionally, if you prefer the added security of organized tours, you might find platforms like GetYourGuide helpful in finding trusted local guides and popular tourist activities. On here, you can book a variety of India-related experiences, including city tours, cultural activities, visits to historical sites, adventure excursions, day trips, food tours and even attendance at special events and festivals. You can use my link to book your activities here.
Stay vigilant
Hey, one of the best pieces of advice I can give is to always stay aware of your surroundings. Trust your gut—if something feels off, it probably is. Keep an eye on your belongings and try to avoid distractions, like being glued to your phone, especially in public places. It's all about staying alert so you can quickly pick up on and react to anything that seems off. Remember, your intuition is your best friend when it comes to staying safe. Just stay sharp and trust yourself!
Solo travel is such a rewarding experience, full of unforgettable memories and new discoveries. By keeping these safety tips in mind and staying aware, you can explore with confidence and really soak in everything your journey has to offer.
